Hello again dear readers, Jerzy here with some InK talk.
Apparently, even in different timelines, even in dream worlds, even in a movie as original as this, there are fucking hipsters doing good while looking fashionable. What started slowly with something akin to the dream Power Rangers evolved, in due time, to be a compelling story. I am usually against films that use children as cheap saccharine plot lines, one of the other reasons for my initial reaction, but the twisting end was quite sublime and the child had her part to play. Additionally, little Emma's interactions with the mystery warrior woman were as adorable as the curly tressed warrior-orator was tempting.
While I found the Power Rangers squad quite annoying, I was very pleased with the originality of the villains and InK himself. But back to the villains, who, in my opinion, were not addressed enough as an entity. Confusingly they were referred to as Incubus's, which gave the movie a decidedly heaven v. hell aspect all of a sudden (like an hour in so it was too late to ruin it). I was especially amused at the Sachiko Hanai-esque hands on sticks which the Incubus palace guards seem to employ and resultingly I BLOLed heartily. Speaking of BLOLs, the only comedic foil in this movie, the blind Pathfinder, was good and served his role even if it was quite limited.
But enough plot/character chit chat. I found this movie to be well shot despite it being out of focus along the edges pretty much the entire time. Scenes were almost never unnecessary, except the very beginning fight which dragged and was dumb, despite the movie going 1 3/4 hours. Effects were excellent, especially the villains, and costuming was almost perfect. My one criticism is that they let Ink's mask fall for too long in a scene far from the end where you can finally confirm your suspicions about his true nature. Maybe they should've bulked the face up in that scene or something but you can tell it's the dude and I think it would've been a better movie if no one knew for sure until the end who he was. Minor point.
I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to friends and not my enemies, my highest rating! think Matrix meets Pan's Labyrinth and add a dash of Inception to glue it all together.
