More 2010

Catching up on the movies I've seen recently. There hasn't been many. Hopefully that will change soon.

Catfish (2010)

Forget The Social Network. Catfish is the more important Facebook movie of 2010. Dealing with questions of relationships, trust, empathy and the fundamental drive humans have to connect, Catfish is almost impossible to write about without spoiling.

If you've come to this film looking for a thriller, you're probably going to be disappointed. The documentary goes through so many different layers before the "emotionally intense" final forty minutes the trailer hypes. At it's heart, Catfish is an emotional, awkward and deeply affecting documentary about our future dreams and those that we have lost. It is not what you expect, but then life rarely is. It is impossible to watch this documentary without really feeling for every single person in it.

That is all I will say right now because I do not want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it. The movie is truly not what you think based on the trailer - it's actually so much more mundane and human, which is really quite sad and beautiful.

True Grit (2010)

I enjoyed this film way more than I expected. Even after all the discussion here, I was not really into it. However, I am happy to say that after viewing the film I think this is definitely amongst the top of 2010.

There has been so much discussion about this film here that I feel really intimidated to post about it. I want to see it again before I do. The back and forth between John and Brandon was brilliant and illuminated so much that I did not pick up on.

Somewhere (2010)

As the resident Sofia Coppola fan, I feel kind of bad that I cannot give Somewhere a glowing review. That is not to say that I didn't like it, but I fear I liked it because I have come to expect and enjoy Coppola's style - she subtly captures the mood and tone in every film. I can easily see why others would hate it, however. Of course, isn't the mark of a good artist that equal amount of people love and hate their work?

Elle Fanning is absolutely adorable in this film. Surprisingly, so is Chris Pontius (of Jackass fame).

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within (2010)

I suspect that fans of Burroughs will love this documentary and that those who have never read him will find it all a bit strange. I, for one, loved it.
