Let Me In and some other commentary

I finally got a chance to watch Let Me In. I was highly anticipating this film based on reviews and my love of the original Swedish version.

If I were comparing the original and the remake head to head, I would have to vote for the original as my preferred. But I am going to try to focus on this version and not make any comparisons. This film definitely is good enough to stand on it's own.

Normally, I don't like the "Two Weeks Earlier" thing in movies. Never have, probably never will. So, maybe that is why I felt that the beginning cheapened the film a bit. I guess it serves the purpose of throwing the audience off early by suggesting that he is the "monster." Indeed, he does the killing early in the film (and looks quite creepy in his trash bag). However, as soon as the audience is given multiple shots of Abby walking barefoot in the snow, it is obvious that she is the one to whom we should be paying attention.

Much like the Swedish version, this film makes a strong case for why the whole "vampire" genre should be taken back from Twilight and True Blood. It portrays complex relationships and explores loneliness and alienation in a way that is both scary and relatable.

Let Me In is not really a thriller or a horror movie. When Abby is feeding she does look very creepy. However, when the vampire side of her comes out, it is almost sad. She can't control herself and suffers for it.

One of my favorite scenes:

Brandon - I enjoyed your post about the horror genre. Unfortunately, a lot of the movies you mentioned are not available on NWI and a quick check of what is available holds very little interest for me.

John - Thanks for the short film list. I'm going to be searching for them tonight. I think that Abby will probably enjoy Running the Sahara. Let me know what she says after she sees it. Also, I have tentative plans to see True Grit with a friend on Tuesday. She was praising The Fighter this morning so I might try to see that tonight, although I kind of already had plans to watch the PBS documentary New Learners of the 21st Century.

Alright, got to finish up some schoolwork and then get to the Sunday Times. Peace.
