Ok, as I started to go back to read the True Grit posts I realized that there is a lot of stuff that I have wanted to respond to but haven't had a chance. So, before I write about True Grit let me clear the air of a few other things first.
John: I've been told by at least five different people that I need to watch Dexter RIGHT NOW. But, I still have not done it. I do not doubt that it is a show I will enjoy. I do, however, doubt my ability to be productive once I begin watching a really good TV show. So, I keep putting off watching it until I have a few days free to marathon through it.
I have been watching clips from Ebert Presents online since it began a few weeks ago. I don't have much to say about either Ignatiy or Christy. I haven't really paid attention to either of them until just recently (thanks to Film Club, my reading of movie critics has gone way up). I did really like Christy's take on Magnolia. She is right, that film is definitely a love it or hate it type. I happen to love it. Also, I agree with her aboutTom Cruise. Magnolia is his best work.
Roger Ebert is one of those people for whom I have a great amount of respect. He may have lost his voice, but I love the fact that the Internet provides him with an such a wonderful outlet. He is so prolific on both his blog and Twitter. Truly one of America's treasures, IMHO.
Your Short Film List has not been forgotten. I am going to find them all soon. As for Wholphin, I mostly agree with you. You'll notice I only subscribed to it for a year (Note: I still get The Believer. The next issue is the film issue). There are a few shorts on there that do stand out to me though. Of course, I don't remember the name of them. There is one that Natalie Portman wrote and directed that is really good. Also, one of the best takes on the zombie genre is on one of them as well. And there is a pretty interesting short documentary about rich kids.
Lake of Fire is on my short list of documentaries to watch. Politically and philosophically, I tend to fall just about as far left as anyone does. However, of all the issues that I have read and thought about, abortion is still the one that I have the most ethical problems with.
Brandon: I agree with you about Reeves being the better director. But Let the Right One In has a certain JNSQ that Let Me In didn't seem to quite capture. Again, not to knock Let Me In because I thought it was good.
I'm noticing that the broken marriage (relationship) genre seems to be something that I enjoy. Perhaps it is because I consider myself to generally be a romantic but overall pessimistic about love.
My Brother's Wedding has been added to my NWI queue. 191 minutes is a big commitment for me right now, but your post really intrigued me.
I see you've come to your senses and dropped The Social Network from your Top Ten of 2010 list. Expect my list to show up very soon. I think that I am close to caught up on all the 2010 films that I wanted to see. Shit, I'm two months behind on 2011...
Have an awesome time at South by Southwest.
Jason: You always seem to watch a lot of movies that I have not seen.
If you get a chance, the commentary on El Mariachi is really interesting. It has been years since I watched it though and can not offer anything else but that. If you want to see a mind-blowing film that was made for $7000, check out Primer. It's one of my favorites.
I watched Cashback on NWI as few years ago. Decent indie.
The Girlfriend Experience was a film that I thought was really subtle and good. I saw it when it first came out. Probably would need another viewing in order to debate Brandon on his hatred of it though.
I, too, am looking forward to your The New World post. I just lent that movie to a friend of mine tonight. She got the extended cut version because that is all I have. So far, John and Brandon are the only two other people that I know who have as much love and respect for that film as I do.
-----------
Alright, True Grit post is next. While you are waiting, you can listen to the Hitchcock and Truffaut Tapes. I've only listened to a bit, but I have a feeling there are 12 hours of fascinating discussion there.
Peace.
