Prodigal Sons

"All the lives we could live, all the people we will never know, never will be, they are everywhere. That is what the world is."  ~Aleksandar Hemon

Thanks to Brandon's recommendation this morning, I just finished watching Prodigal Sons.  I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say that this is a documentary that every single person should have to watch.  It's so heart-breaking and sad and real and genuine.  I appreciate that it uncomfortably brings us a little bit closer to understanding the "other."

There is a scene in the beginning of the film that made me realize that I was about to watch something a lot more complex and affecting than I at first expected.  It is when Marc is playing the piano alone in another room.  He plays so beautifully that it made me look past what I was expecting.  Through all the twists and turns and disasters that follow, the family never lets go of the beautiful song - love.

I'm going to be thinking about this documentary for a long time.
